But during the Stepan Razin rebellion, the Astrakhanians, having risen to the side of the rebels, opened the gates of the southern stronghold themselves. And only a few people from the whole garrison remained faithful to their military duty and desperately defended the Artillery Tower, one of the impenetrable towers of the fortress wall. They were the people of Prince Kasbulat Mutsalovich Cherkassky and several Russian gunners, led by Uzden Kazyev. The history of the brave and hopeless defense of the tower is devoted to this study.
